Mitosis is the most common type of cell division in eukaryotes. It allows a parent cell to split in two to give two daughter cells genetically identical to the mother cell. The mother and daughter cells have the same 23 pairs of chromosomes; we can therefore say that they are diploid. Mitosis has two main functions in humans: growth and regeneration.

The phases of mitosis are four in number: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase.
