Question 1: Read the description to Schoenberg's, A Survivor from Warsaw, Op. 46 (1947) in your textbook (page 232), and the lecture page. Then watch/listen to A Survivor from Warsaw, Op. 46 using the listening guide (posted on the lecture page). How does the music reflect the text/story (including what this piece is about)? What specific musical techniques does Schoenberg use to tell this story? Does Schoenberg use the major-minor tonal system for this piece, or an entirely different/new system? Please discuss. (6 pts) Question 2: Watch/listen to Charles Ives, Putnam's Camp, Redding, Connecticut from Three Places in New England. Did you like/dislike Charles Ives' style? Explain why. (2 pts)

Question 3: It is often suggested that composers in the 20th century resorted to this highly dissonant style of composition because social and political circumstances at the time could only be described in "dissonant" and "chaotic" musical terms (consider WWI, WWII, and Great Depression). Do you think that this was the case, or were composers simply seeking new ways of expressing themselves? (consider that all music from about 1600 (early Baroque) up until the 20th century was based on clear major and minor tonality). Please discuss. (2 pts)
