Answer these questions using Utah's state captitol From its inception, the United States has continually turned to a Neoclassical approach for public art and architecture. Heavily influenced by Thomas Jefferson, who believed that our national morality could be shaped by art and architecture, government structures and art, even today, are often tinged with classicism. The classical past (a time of democracy, patriotism and civic duty, educational excellence, and moderate restraint) embodied just the principles the United States wanted (and still wants) its populace to embrace and absorb. Neoclassical style in art and architecture is an effective propagandic tool to spread these ideals throughout the nation, just as art and architecture were effective propaganda in the Baroque and Neoclassical eras. In this assignment, you'll see how that mindset affects architecture in your region/state.

First, look up an image of your home state's capitol building. Include the labeled image with your assignment (1 point). If you are an international student, you can choose a government building from your home country (ONLY if it reflects Neoclassical elements) OR you can choose any U. S. state you'd like and work with that.
Identify the classical elements in architecture that you see there (10 points). Are there common classical architectural elements that were not included (4 points)? Between these two questions, you should be addressing at least ten architectural elements. Be sure to identify the type of columns you see (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian).
Need some help remembering the classical elements of architecture we studied?
Refer to the example in the lesson or in the lesson on Greek Classical Architecture
Check out the images below (these are very detailed, so don't feel the need to label the small architectural elements labeled here for your structure unless you want to. I wouldn't expect most of you to be able to see the small details through an online image (like dentils, raking, abacus, echinus, rosette, boss, volute, etc.) and thus wouldn't expect you to list them either. Plus, these smaller details were not ones we even included in our earlier modules)
