In 1348, the Black Death swept through Europe, including Ireland. The English and Normans, who lived primarily in the cities and towns, were the most affected. The Irish, on the other hand, dwelled in the more rural and remote areas, and were not as decimated by the disease. As a result, the Irish regained dominance of the island, and the English lost control by the end of the 15th century.
