The "neo-impressionists,” as they were called at the time, believed that was the proper subject for their painting.

Neo-impressionists still used landscapes, public marketplaces, and ports as their main subject of their paintings, through the use of the techniques called pointillism (dots are used to create a pattern) and divisionism (separation of colors into small dots).
