Mannerism carries with it intertwined elements of both the Renaissance and the Baroque.
In painting, the main characteristics of Mannerism are compositions made mostly with sacred themes so that a multitude of figurative elements are compressed into reduced architectural spaces.
The main artist of Mannerism was Doménikos Theotokópoulo, better known as El Greco, (The Greek) (1541 - 1614). By merging the Byzantine iconographic forms with the drawing and color of Venetian painting and Spanish religiosity, he created his own expression.
In fact, his work was not fully understood by his contemporaries. Born in Crete, he is believed to have started as an icon painter at the Santa Catarina convent, in Cândia.
According to existing documents, in the year 1567 he emigrated to Venice, where he began to work in Titian's studio, with whom he carried out some works.
