"You will be haunted,'' resumed the Ghost, "by Three Spirits. '' According to Marley, the first spirit will appear the next night "when the bell tolls one." The second will come at the same time on the next evening."

After the last spirit has left and he realizes it is morning and he is still alive, Scrooge is overjoyed. He takes the spirits' lessons about loving others seriously and is transformed. When Marley visits Scrooge at the beginning of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge's attitude towards the visits of the spirits is very blasé.
