Take a story such as Romeo and Juliet.  Two star-crossed lovers divided by society.  Like many relationships in movies and plays, this strong and endearing romance between them ends in a tragedy.  People can easily relate to these themes being expressed in modern times because there is a relatable connection to something like a magnetic romance being pulled apart by external events and environments that make it impossible to work.
