During the Renaissance, many rebel artists (such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, Jan van Eyck, and Albrecht Durer) began exploring ideas of creativity other than what was sanctioned by the religious authorities. Artists at that time were expected to adhere to the orders of the Church and depict scenes from Biblical events or of icons of Christianity.  

The rebels were influenced by the social, religious, and cultural trends of their times, but they chose not to bow down to authority. They considered themselves to be humanists with a larger interest in natural phenomenon, science, anatomy, and self-expression. They were the earliest proponents of individualism. Michelangelo’s sculpture of David is an example of individualism. It depicted a human being with a perfect body, rather than a god.
