A Game of Cat and Mouse

One day, as Mouse sat snugly inside her home in the wall, she heard Cat approach her mouse hole. Cat poked his nose into the hole and purred, “Good evening, Mouse. Why don’t you come out of your hole and play with me?”

Feeling sure that Cat would eat her the instant she left her home, Mouse replied, “Why would I come out to play with you, Cat? For as long as I can remember, you have tried to catch me whenever you see me.”

“Oh, haven’t you heard the news, Mouse?” asked Cat. “There was a meeting in the barn last night, and every animal agreed that, from now on, we will all try to get along. There is no reason to fear me now, Mouse. We will be the best of friends.”

Mouse liked the idea of having a new friend, but she was doubtful. She remembered that sneaky Cat had tried to trick her many times before. She decided to test Cat before leaving the safety of her home.

“Listen, Cat. I hear Dog coming toward the house,” Mouse squeaked. “Once he arrives, I will come out and the three of us can all play together.”

“What’s that?” replied Cat, nervously. “Dog is coming here?! Um, maybe we should play later. I just realized that I have to go!”

“But why would you leave?” questioned Mouse. “You said that all of the animals agreed to be friendly. There’s no need to be afraid of Dog anymore.”

Cat gulped, “Well, maybe Dog didn’t hear about the agreement either. See you later, Mouse!” And with that, Cat scurried out of the house, without even looking back.

Mouse squeaked a tiny laugh as she realized that there had been no meeting in the barn. Cat was simply up to his old tricks. Mouse curled up in her tiny bed and fell fast asleep in her safe and cozy home.
