following steps:

• Locate your school as a starting point in the mapping program you are using. Ask your teacher for
help, if needed.

• Mark your school’s location on the map using whatever tool the mapping program has available.
For example, you may have the option to drop a “push pin” on your school’s location on the map.

• Choose a fast-food chain to search for in the area surrounding your school. Alternatively, you
could also use a type of service (grocery stores, gas stations).

• Search the map for all of the service locations (example: all of the McDonald’s restaurants)
surrounding your school. Specific distance parameters may be set by your teacher.

• Examine the results of the search. How are the service locations distributed in your area?

After finding six to twelve locations on the map, or a number specified by your teacher, answer the following questions.

1. How does your map prove or disprove central place theory? Your discussion should include
correct use of the vocabulary words threshold and range.

2. What caused any distortions to the hexagon shape of central place theory when you applied it to
your local area?

3. What assumptions held in central place theory were not true for your local area? How did this
affect your final decision of proof of this theory?
