Letters of a Civil War Nurse: Analyze this document by providing its "HIPP”: Historical context, Intended audience, author’s Purpose, and author’s Point of view.

Starting with the historical context, these letters were written in 1863, from July 7th to August 17th, during the Civil War, where nurses had to care for injured soldiers. In the letters, there are examples of what Cornelia had to see or deal with.

These are written by a nurse, Cornelia Hancock, to different family members. Her mother, her niece, and her cousin are who I believe to be the intended audience. The purpose of these letters was to give information about what was currently happening for her, and what a day in her life looked like. For example, in one of the letters written to her mother, she talks about how some people were praying for food, and that though no one was to blame for this, it still occurred. She also describes how what she has to witness would be horrifying for her mom or a regular citizen coming to see their friend, but for her, it's not because she's so used to seeing it. 

As a reader, I do believe that women's experiences during the war were challenging since they had to help nurse the soldiers back to health and provide for them. I also believe that based off of Cornelia's letters, the war left an effect on many lives, not only hers. She does mention friends coming to see someone, and them being all mangled up. She describes this as not only painful for them, but for her as well.
